Legal migration and work
Working abroad legally from Algeria: Germany, France, the UK and Canada compared
There is no shortcut to a legal job abroad, but there are real routes. Here is what each country asks from an Algerian worker in 2026, what it costs, and how to spot the fake job offers that circulate on social media.
Every legal work route needs the same three things in a different mix: a recognised qualification, a language level, and either a job offer from an employer allowed to hire foreigners or enough points in a selection system. Germany has a job-search card that does not need an offer. Canada selects by points. France and the UK mostly need an employer first. In all four, a recruiter who asks you for money to “get” a contract is a warning sign.
At a glance
| Country | Main route | Job offer needed first? | Language |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | Opportunity Card, EU Blue Card, skilled worker visa | No for the Opportunity Card | German A1 or English B2 minimum |
| France | Salaried work visa, Talent routes | Yes, except some Talent profiles | French usually expected |
| United Kingdom | Skilled Worker | Yes, from a licensed sponsor | English B2 since January 2026 |
| Canada | Express Entry, Quebec PSTQ | No, points-based | Approved English or French test |
Germany: the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)
With a job offer in hand, the EU Blue Card (university graduates above a yearly-set salary) and the skilled worker visa are faster routes. Nurses, care workers, engineers and IT profiles are in particular demand.
- For people with a university degree or at least two years of vocational training recognised by the Algerian state.
- You need 6 points (qualification, German or English, experience, age, ties to Germany), or a fully recognised qualification, which skips the points.
- Minimum language: German A1 or English B2.
- Proof of funds: €1,091 a month for 2026, usually through a blocked account, for up to one year.
- You may work up to 20 hours a week and do trial work while you look for a qualified job, then switch to a work permit.
- Apply at the German Embassy in Algiers. Check first whether your diploma is known in the anabin database or needs a ZAB assessment.
France
Most salaried jobs need the employer to obtain a work authorisation before you apply for a long-stay visa. Graduates, researchers, founders and highly paid staff can use the “Talent” routes. For Algerians, the Franco-Algerian agreement of 1968 governs residence in France, so some cards available to other nationalities work differently: the France-Visas wizard with Algerian nationality selected shows your real options.
United Kingdom: Skilled Worker
- A job offer from an employer with a sponsor licence, in an eligible occupation and at or above the required salary.
- English at B2 level for applications from January 2026.
- Visa fee from £819 (up to three years) plus the immigration health surcharge of £1,035 a year.
- The sponsor issues a Certificate of Sponsorship. Sponsors are not allowed to make you pay for it.
Canada
Canada does not require a job offer for Express Entry. Points come from age, education, language, experience and, increasingly, French. Quebec selects through Arrima. See our full Canada guide for 2026 draws and amounts.
Prepare in Algeria
- Diplomas and transcripts authenticated by the ministry that issued them, then legalised as the destination asks.
- Sworn translations into the destination’s language.
- A language certificate recognised by that country (Goethe or telc, IELTS, TEF/TCF Canada, DELF/DALF).
- Work certificates with dates, duties and salary, and your CNAS record.
- Men of national-service age: settle your national service status before a long stay abroad.
- Once abroad, register with the Algerian consulate (immatriculation consulaire).
How to spot a fake job offer
Important
- A real employer does not ask you to pay for the contract, the visa sponsorship or the “file”.
- Check the company exists: commercial register, website, sponsor or employer lists where published (the UK sponsor register is public).
- Offers by WhatsApp only, with a salary far above the market and no interview, are almost always fraud.
- Never hand your original passport to an intermediary.
- Working on a tourist visa is illegal and can lead to removal and a ban.
Questions
Can I go to Germany to look for work without a job offer?
Yes, with the Opportunity Card, if you reach 6 points or have a fully recognised qualification and show €1,091 a month (2026) for your stay.
What English level does the UK Skilled Worker visa need?
B2 for applications made from January 2026.
Do I need a job offer for Canada?
Not for Express Entry, which is points-based. A valid offer can add points in some cases.
Is paying an agency for a work contract legal?
Charging workers for a contract or sponsorship is forbidden in the UK, Canada and Germany, and is a classic scam pattern.
