Legal migration and work
Canada from Algeria in 2026: visitor visa, study permit, Express Entry and Quebec
Canada is the most common legal emigration target for French-speaking Algerians. Here are the four doors, what each one costs and asks for in 2026, and why speaking French now counts more than ever.
Algerian citizens need a visa to visit Canada; the electronic eTA is not open to them. All applications go online through an IRCC account, and fingerprints and photo are taken at the VFS Global visa application centre in Algiers. For settling, the main legal routes are a study permit followed by work, the federal Express Entry system, and Quebec’s own selection. Each route is points- or document-based; no agency can buy you a place.

Four doors into Canada
Visit
Temporary resident visa for tourism, family or business. No work allowed.
Study
Study permit with an acceptance letter from a designated school. Can lead to a work permit and later permanent residence.
Express Entry
Federal points system for skilled workers. Invitations are issued in rounds; French speakers have their own draws.
Quebec
Quebec selects its own immigrants through Arrima. French is central.
Visitor visa
- Apply online in your IRCC account. Paper applications are only for exceptions.
- Fees at the time of checking: CAD 100 for the visa and CAD 85 for biometrics (CAD 170 maximum for a family applying together).
- After paying, you receive a biometrics letter. Book at VFS Global in Algiers; the appointment itself is free.
- Show strong ties to Algeria (job, business, family, property), funds for the stay and a clear purpose. An invitation letter from family in Canada helps but does not replace your own proof.
- Biometrics stay valid 10 years, so later applications are quicker.
Study permit in 2026
Canada caps new study permits. For 2026 IRCC set a target of up to 408,000 permits, of which 155,000 for new students. Most students need a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from the province where they will study; since 1 January 2026 master’s and doctoral students at public institutions no longer do.
| Item | Amount or rule |
|---|---|
| Study permit fee | CAD 150 |
| Biometrics | CAD 85 |
| Living funds, one person outside Quebec (from 1 Sept 2026) | CAD 23,448 plus first-year tuition and travel |
| Quebec | Quebec acceptance certificate (CAQ) first, then the federal permit |
| PAL or TAL | Needed, except master’s and PhD at public institutions and a few other groups |
Express Entry
- Check you fit one of the three programmes: Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class or Federal Skilled Trades.
- Take an approved language test: IELTS General, CELPIP or PTE Core for English; TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French.
- Have your Algerian diploma assessed (Educational Credential Assessment) by an organisation IRCC designates.
- Create your profile. You get a CRS score out of 1,200 for age, studies, language, experience and other factors.
- If you are invited, you have 60 days to send the full permanent residence application with police certificates and medical exam.
French-language draws
Since 2023 IRCC runs draws only for candidates with strong French. In 2026 they became larger and more frequent. Each of the draws below invited 5,000 people; the score shown is the lowest one invited. A good TEF or TCF Canada result is the single biggest boost many Algerian profiles can get.
| Date | Invitations | Lowest CRS |
|---|---|---|
| 27 October 2026 | 5,000 | 407 |
| 16 October 2026 | 5,000 | 435 |
| 19 August 2026 | 5,000 | 382 |
| 6 August 2026 | 5,000 | 391 |
| 22 July 2026 | 5,000 | 399 |
| 9 July 2026 | 5,000 | 420 |
Quebec
Quebec chooses its own economic immigrants. Since 2024–2025 the main route is the Programme de sélection des travailleurs qualifiés (PSTQ): you create an expression of interest in Arrima, the ministry invites candidates in rounds, and selected people receive a Quebec selection certificate (CSQ) before applying to IRCC for permanent residence. In mid-2026 rounds invited a few hundred to about 2,500 people at a time. French at an intermediate level or higher is expected in most streams.
What to prepare first
- A valid passport and certified translations of civil status documents.
- Language test results (TEF/TCF Canada or IELTS/CELPIP/PTE Core), valid two years.
- Diploma assessment (ECA) for Express Entry.
- Work certificates with duties, hours and salary, and payslips or CNAS records.
- Bank statements showing the funds required, held over time rather than deposited the day before.
- Police certificate (casier judiciaire) when asked.
Scams
Important
- Only CICC-licensed consultants and Canadian lawyers or notaries may charge to represent you. Check the CICC register.
- IRCC never asks for payment by gift card, transfer to a person, or crypto, and never sells job offers.
- A “job offer with LMIA” for a fee is illegal: employers may not charge workers for it.
- Draw dates and scores are public on canada.ca. Nobody has inside access.
