Schengen visa from Algeria in 2026: which consulate, which centre, what it costs

One short-stay visa opens 29 European countries for up to 90 days. Here is how Algerians choose the right consulate, where to file, what to pay, and what changed at the border with the new EES check.

Algerian passport holders need a visa for every Schengen country. The short-stay “C” visa covers tourism, family visits, business trips and short training, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You file with the consulate of the country where you will spend the most time, through the visa centre that consulate has chosen. Fees are set at EU level; the centre adds its own service fee in dinars.

The 90/180-day rule

A Schengen short-stay visa lets you stay up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, across all Schengen countries together. The 90 days are counted backwards from each day you are in the area, so two 45-day trips close together use up the whole allowance. The visa sticker also shows how many entries you have and the exact validity dates; staying one day past them is an overstay that is recorded and can count against you later.

29 countries

Including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Romania.

Up to 90 days

In any 180 days. Study, work or family settlement need a national long-stay “D” visa instead.

One application

One consulate decides, and the visa is valid in the whole area unless it says otherwise.

02

Which consulate to apply to

  • If you visit one country, apply to that country’s consulate.
  • If you visit several, apply to the one where you will spend the most nights.
  • If the nights are equal, apply to the country you enter first.
  • Apply to the consulate that covers where you live in Algeria. France, for example, has consulates in Algiers, Oran and Annaba, each with its own district.
  • File no earlier than six months and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before the trip.
03

Who takes the files in Algeria

Most consulates use a private visa centre for appointments, fingerprints and fee collection. Only the consulate decides on the visa. Always check the provider on the embassy’s own website before you book.

What it costs

Fees are paid in dinars at the consulate’s rate, and are not refunded if the visa is refused. For France, since 7 October 2026 Capago collects visa and service fees in cash at the centre on the day of the appointment, because online prepayment is suspended. Budget also for travel medical insurance and any translation of documents.

EU visa fees, unchanged since June 2024; the centre’s service fee comes on top

The documents most consulates ask for

  • A passport issued in the last 10 years, valid at least three months after you leave, with two blank pages.
  • The signed application form and a recent photo that meets ICAO standards.
  • Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries for the whole trip.
  • Proof of the trip: return booking or itinerary, hotel booking or an invitation (attestation d’accueil for France).
  • Proof of means: recent bank or CCP statements, payslips, and your work certificate, business register or student card.
  • Proof you will come back: job, studies, family, property. Earlier Schengen visas used correctly help.
06

Step by step

  1. Pick the consulate using the rules above and open its official page.
  2. Fill in the online form if the country has one (France-Visas for France), then print it.
  3. Book the appointment on the provider’s official site. Booking is free.
  4. Go to the centre on time with the original documents and copies, and give your fingerprints (valid 59 months).
  5. Pay the visa and service fees as the centre asks.
  6. Follow the file online. The legal decision time is 15 calendar days, which can be extended to 45.
  7. Collect your passport and check the dates, the number of entries and your name on the sticker.
07

The new EES border check

Since October 2025 the EU’s Entry/Exit System registers non-EU travellers at the Schengen border. It was rolled out over six months and was due to be complete in April 2026. On your first trip you give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border; after that, entries and exits are recorded digitally instead of with passport stamps, and the system counts your 90/180 days automatically. You still need your visa: ETIAS, the online travel permit, is for visa-free travellers, not for Algerians.

08

If you are refused

  • The refusal comes on a standard form with the ticked reason (purpose not proven, means, doubt about return, false document…).
  • You can appeal under that country’s law within the time limit written on the letter. For France it starts with a prior administrative appeal.
  • You can also apply again with a stronger file that answers the reason given. There is no waiting period.
  • Fees are not refunded. Never add a document you did not get yourself: a forged paper can lead to a ban.
09

Scams to avoid

Important

  • Appointments are free on the official sites. Do not buy a slot on Facebook or from a “facilitator”.
  • Nobody can guarantee a visa. Offers of “visa + contract” for a fee are fraud.
  • Bought hotel bookings or fake bank statements are spotted and recorded in the Schengen information systems.
  • Insurance must come from a licensed insurer; keep the original policy.
Questions

Questions

How much is a Schengen visa for Algerians in 2026?

The EU fee is €90 for adults and children from 12, €45 for ages 6 to 11, and free under 6. The visa centre adds a service fee in dinars.

Which country gives Schengen visas most easily to Algerians?

None should be picked for that reason. Apply to the country where you will spend the most time; applying elsewhere to “shop” can lead to refusal or problems at the border.

How long does a Schengen visa take?

The legal time is 15 days after the appointment, up to 45 in some cases. Waiting for an appointment can take weeks in summer, so start early.

Can I work with a Schengen visa?

No. The short-stay visa does not allow paid work. Work needs a national work visa and permit.

Do Algerians need ETIAS?

No. ETIAS is for visa-free nationalities. Algerians keep applying for a visa.

EXDZ is not a visa agent and is not linked to any consulate or visa centre. Rules and fees change; the consulate’s own page and the official visa centre are the reference. Book appointments only on the official sites, they are free.
