France visa from Algeria in 2026: France-Visas, Capago and cash payment

Since 2025 Capago, not TLScontact or VFS, takes French visa files in Algeria. Here is the order of steps, the centre for your district, what to pay and how, and what to do after a refusal.

Every French visa application from Algeria starts online on France-Visas, the government portal, and ends at a Capago centre, where you hand in the file, give fingerprints and pay. Capago replaced TLScontact and VFS Global in 2025 and now serves the three French consulates (Algiers, Oran and Annaba) from four centres. The consulate alone decides; Capago cannot speed up or influence a decision.

Capago centres and consular districts

You must file in the centre that serves the consular district where you live. Filing in the wrong district can lead to a refusal.

Step by step

  1. Create an account on france-visas.gouv.fr, answer the “visa wizard” questions and fill in the form. It shows the exact document list for your case.
  2. Print the form, sign it and keep the reference number.
  3. Book a Capago appointment on its official site. Since October 2026 bookings are confirmed automatically; keep the confirmation on paper or on your phone, you need it to enter.
  4. Arrive at least 15 minutes early with the file in the order of the checklist, originals and copies.
  5. Give fingerprints and a photo, then pay the fees in cash at the centre.
  6. Follow the file with your reference by SMS, email or on Capago’s site, and collect your passport when told.
03

Fees and the cash rule

Since 7 October 2026 Capago has suspended online prepayment: visa and service fees are paid in cash, in dinars, at the centre on the day you file. Capago says there are no cash machines nearby, so bring the amount with you. The service fee is shown when you book and is not refunded after a refusal. No return date for online payment had been announced when we checked.

Which visa

Short stay (C)

Tourism, family visit, business, medical care, up to 90 days in 180. Family hosting usually needs the host’s attestation d’accueil from their town hall.

Circulation visa

A multiple-entry short-stay visa valid one to five years, given to regular travellers who used earlier visas correctly.

Student (D)

Only after the Campus France “Études en France” procedure. See our Campus France guide.

Family and spouse

Spouse of a French citizen, family reunification or a child joining a parent. Each has its own list on France-Visas.

Work and talent

Long-stay visas for an employee with an approved work authorisation, or the “Talent” route for graduates, researchers and founders.

05

Documents for a short stay

  • Passport less than 10 years old, valid three months after the return date, plus copies of earlier visas.
  • The signed France-Visas form and two recent ID photos.
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in the Schengen area.
  • Return booking, hotel booking or the host’s attestation d’accueil and a copy of their ID.
  • Last three months of bank or CCP statements and payslips, or the business register and tax documents for traders.
  • Proof of your situation in Algeria: work certificate and leave approval, student certificate, or retirement document.
06

Algerians and the 1968 agreement

Algerian nationals living in France are covered by the Franco-Algerian agreement of 27 December 1968, not by most of the general foreigners’ code. In practice the long-term residence document is the “certificat de résidence algérien”, and some routes open to other nationalities (for example certain work cards) work differently for Algerians. Check the France-Visas wizard with your nationality selected, and ask the consulate if your case is unusual.

07

After a refusal

  • Read the reason ticked on the refusal form.
  • In France a prior administrative appeal is compulsory before going to court. It must be filed within 30 days, with the authority named in the refusal letter.
  • If that appeal fails, the case goes to the administrative court of Nantes, which handles visa disputes.
  • You can also file a new application that answers the reason. Fees are paid again.
08

Scams

Important

  • Capago appointments are free to book. Pages selling slots on social media are not Capago.
  • Capago staff and consulates never ask for payment by BaridiMob transfer or to a personal account.
  • Only enter your data on france-visas.gouv.fr and on the official Capago site you reach from it.
