Study abroad
Scholarships and student exchanges for Algerians: Erasmus+, Türkiye, Hungary, UK, US
Several governments and the EU pay full scholarships that Algerians can apply for directly. Most open between autumn and February, so the time to prepare is now. Here is each one, who it is for, and how exchanges between Algerian and European universities really work.
Fully funded scholarships cover tuition, a monthly allowance and often housing and flights. They are competitive, but they are free to apply for and do not need an agency. For short exchanges (a semester abroad while staying enrolled in Algeria), the main route is Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility, which runs through agreements between your university and a European partner: you apply to your own university’s international relations office, not to the EU.

Türkiye Bursları
- Turkish government scholarship for bachelor’s, master’s and PhD.
- Covers tuition, housing, a monthly allowance, health insurance, a one-year Turkish course and a return flight.
- Age limits on 1 January of the application year: under 21 for bachelor’s, under 30 for master’s, under 35 for PhD.
- Apply on turkiyeburslari.gov.tr; shortlisted candidates are interviewed.
Stipendium Hungaricum
Algeria is a sending partner of Hungary’s government scholarship. Algerian students are nominated through the Algerian higher education ministry, then admitted by the Hungarian university. Programmes are taught in English or Hungarian and cover tuition, a monthly allowance, housing support and health insurance. Check the partner list for the fields open to Algeria each year.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters
EU-funded master’s degrees taught in two or more European countries. Open to all nationalities, including Algerians. Scholarships cover participation costs, travel and a monthly allowance. You apply to each consortium directly; there is no central form. The EU’s Erasmus Mundus catalogue lists the programmes and their deadlines.
Chevening and Fulbright
Chevening (United Kingdom)
One-year master’s in the UK, fully funded, for future leaders with at least two years of work experience. Algeria is an eligible country.
Fulbright (United States)
Master’s, PhD and research grants run with the U.S. Embassy in Algiers. Grantees travel on a J-1 visa.
DAAD (Germany)
Scholarships for master’s, PhD and research stays, listed in the DAAD database by country.
Other governments
China, Japan (MEXT) and others offer scholarships through their embassies in Algiers. Calls are posted on embassy sites.
Erasmus+ exchanges: the “student swap”
- Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility funds semesters abroad for students and staff of partner-country universities, including Algeria.
- It only works if your university has an agreement with a European university. Ask your faculty or the vice-rectorate for external relations.
- Calls are posted on the university’s site and boards; selection uses grades, language level and a motivation letter.
- The grant covers travel and a monthly amount. Credits earned abroad count toward your Algerian degree.
- European students can come to your university under the same agreement, which is how the exchange works both ways.
Prepare your file
- Passport valid for the whole study period.
- Translated and certified diplomas and transcripts.
- Language score: IELTS or TOEFL for English programmes, TCF/DELF for French, Turkish or Hungarian courses are often provided.
- A motivation letter written for each programme, not a copy.
- Two recommendation letters from teachers or employers.
Scams
Important
- Real scholarships never charge a “processing” or “reservation” fee.
- Agencies that promise a guaranteed scholarship are selling something that does not exist.
- Check the web address: official portals end in .gov.tr, .hu, europa.eu, chevening.org and so on.
