How to receive freelance payments in Algeria in 2026
Upwork, Fiverr and foreign clients pay in dollars and euros. Here is what actually works for someone who lives in Algeria, what it costs, and what to avoid.
Algeria has a large and growing pool of remote workers, but getting paid from abroad is still the hardest part of the job. PayPal does not let accounts in Algeria receive money, most European neobanks require European residence, and crypto is now illegal. The routes that remain are a foreign receiving account that serves Algeria, a direct bank wire to a foreign-currency account in Algeria, and, for some, Wise.

The options that work from Algeria
Grey
USD, EUR and GBP account details, a USD virtual card and withdrawal in DZD. Receiving costs 0.8% (capped at 10) by ACH or SEPA, or 20 USD by wire.
Bank wire to a devises account
A SWIFT transfer into a foreign-currency account at an Algerian bank. Slow (often 5 to 10 working days) and costly per transfer, but fully official.
Wise
Algeria is not on Wise’s unsupported list, but features for residents are limited and the card is not offered. Useful if you also have a residence abroad.

Upwork, Fiverr and direct clients
Platforms pay out to the methods they support in your country. With a USD receiving account, you can usually add it as a US bank account (ACH) or wire destination. Direct clients can pay your EUR details by SEPA or your USD details by ACH. Always send a test payment before switching a large invoice.

What to avoid
- PayPal with a foreign address or someone else’s account: it breaks PayPal’s terms and often ends with a frozen balance.
- Crypto and USDT: Law 25-10, in force since July 2025, bans holding, using and promoting crypto-assets in Algeria, with fines and prison terms.
- Informal “balance buyers” who pay cash for wallet balances: no protection, and the transaction may be illegal.

Getting to dinars
Regulated providers and banks convert at a rate close to the official one. The parallel market pays more for physical euros and dollars, but it sits outside the banking system. Before converting, compare the dinars you will receive with today’s official and Square rates.
